What is it?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection that causes an itchy rash and flu-like symptoms. It is most commonly spread through direct contact with an infected person or through airborne droplets from coughing and sneezing.

Risk areas

Chickenpox occurs worldwide and is most common in childhood. However, it can be more severe in adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
High risk areas include:
  • Adults who have not had chickenpox before
  • Pregnant women
  • Individuals with weakened immune systems
  • People in close-contact environments (e.g. schools, workplaces)

Prevention

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against chickenpox. Additional measures to reduce the risk of infection include:
  • Avoiding close contact with infected individuals
  • Practising good hygiene, including regular handwashing
  • Covering coughs and sneezes
  • Staying at home if infected to prevent spreading the virus

Length of protection

A full course of the chickenpox vaccine provides long-lasting protection. Two doses are usually required for optimal immunity.

Stay safe on your travels

As you embark on your adventures, it's vital to prioritize safety. Don't forget to visit a travel clinic before your trip to ensure you have all necessary vaccinations and medications. Stay safe on your travels by being prepared and taking necessary precautions. Being proactive about health can make all the difference.
