What is it?

Hepatitis A and B are viral infections that affect the liver. Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food or water, while Hepatitis B is transmitted through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. Vaccination helps protect against both types and is especially important for travellers and those at increased risk.

Risk areas

Hepatitis A and B occur worldwide, but the risk is higher in certain regions, including:
  • The Indian subcontinent
  • Sub-Saharan and North Africa
  • South East Asia
  • South & Central America
  • The Middle East
  • East Asia
  • Parts of Eastern & Central Europe
  • The Amazon basin
Risk factors include:
  • Consuming contaminated food or water
  • Unprotected sex
  • Exposure to blood (e.g. healthcare or accidents)
  • Use of non-sterile needles (e.g. tattoos, piercings, or medical treatment)
  • Long stays in higher-risk areas

Prevention

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against Hepatitis A and B. Additional precautions include:
  • Drinking safe or bottled water
  • Avoiding ice from unknown sources
  • Eating freshly cooked, hot food
  • Avoiding contact with blood and bodily fluids
  • Ensuring any medical or cosmetic procedures use sterile equipment

Length of protection

A full course of the combined Hepatitis A and B vaccine provides long-term protection. Hepatitis A protection typically lasts at least 25 years, while Hepatitis B may require a booster in some cases, depending on individual risk.

Vaccine Schedule

There are several well-tolerated hepatitis B vaccines, including combined hepatitis A and B products, and vaccination is recommended for all travellers considered at risk.
