Sinusitis Symptoms
Sinusitis symptoms generally last up to four weeks. Sometimes the symptoms can last more longer, than four weeks. Even lasting months! This is known as chronic sinusitis i.e. the condition does not resolve within the usual timeframe.
Rarely sinusitis becomes chronic (long-term) but when it does you will be referred to a specialist to treat the condition.
Common symptoms
Pain, swelling and tenderness around your cheeks, eyes or forehead
A blocked or runny nose
A reduced sense of smell
Green or yellow mucus from your nose
A high temperature
Less common symptoms
A cough
A headache
Bad breath
Feeling pressure in the ears
Toothache
Who is most at risk?
Having one or more of these risk factors does not mean you will develop sinusitis, but understanding them can help you recognise when to seek advice and support.
Infants and young children may be more susceptible to sinusitis due to developing immune systems and a greater exposure to common infections.
People with respiratory conditions or allergies, including asthma and hay fever, may have an increased risk of developing sinusitis.
Structural differences in the nose, such as narrow nasal passages or nasal polyps, can make sinus drainage more difficult and increase the likelihood of infection.
Smoking can damage the respiratory system and reduce its natural defences, making sinus infections more likely.
What you should know
Sinusitis can usually be managed with simple treatments, but in some cases prescription medication or further medical care may be required. While complications are rare, it is important to recognise warning signs early and seek appropriate advice.
Treatment
Sinusitis may be treated with over-the-counter medicines, prescription nasal sprays, antibiotics, or in rare cases surgical options.
Over-the-counter treatments such as antihistamines and decongestant nasal sprays can provide short-term relief but may not be suitable for everyone.
It is important to speak to a pharmacist before starting any medication, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
A range of nasal sprays, including antihistamine, decongestant, corticosteroid and saline options, may help relieve symptoms.
Some nasal sprays are available over the counter, while others require a prescription.
Corticosteroid nasal sprays help reduce inflammation and swelling and can be accessed through NHS Pharmacy First where appropriate.
Possible Complications
Most cases of sinusitis do not lead to complications.
In some cases, infection may spread and cause cellulitis, leading to swelling around the cheek or eyelid, which requires urgent medical attention.
Cellulitis cannot be treated by a pharmacist and will require referral to a GP or ENT specialist.
In rare cases, infection may spread to nearby bone, although this is extremely uncommon.
Antibiotics are typically required when infection spreads or complications develop.
It is important to seek medical advice promptly if symptoms worsen or complications are suspected.
