The NHS Pharmacy First program is now accessible to assist women suffering from uncomplicated UTIs. Our pharmacists can provide immediate guidance and treatment solutions, eliminating the need to wait for a doctor's appointment to address the symptoms of UTIs.

UTI Symptoms
Bladder infections (cystitis) and urethral infections (urethritis) are common types of lower urinary tract infections (UTIs) that typically affect the bladder and urethra. These infections often cause a range of urinary symptoms that can vary in severity.
More serious infections can affect the upper urinary tract, including the kidneys or ureters (the tubes connecting the kidneys to the bladder), and may lead to more severe symptoms and complications.
Cystitis/urethritis symptoms include:
A need to pee more often than usual
Pain or discomfort when peeing
Feeling generally unwell, achy and tired
Sudden urges to pee
Feeling as though you’re unable to empty your bladder fully
Urine that’s cloudy, foul-smelling or contains blood
Pain low down in your abdomen
Some indications of upper UTI infection in the kidney or ureters
A Fever
Pain in the sides or back
Shivering and chills
Feeling and being sick
Confusion
Agitation or restlessness
Possible causes
UTIs are more common and less serious compared to other types of infections. Prevention through hygiene and proper medical care is important in reducing the risk of UTIs.
Bacteria entering the urinary tract commonly cause UTIs, usually affecting the bladder or urethra where infection can develop quickly.
Certain health and lifestyle factors such as kidney stones, a weakened immune system, diabetes, catheter use, or specific contraceptives can increase the likelihood of infection.
Female anatomy makes UTIs more common in women because the urethra is shorter and positioned closer to the anus, allowing bacteria to travel more easily.
Male‑specific risks can also contribute, particularly when an enlarged prostate restricts urine flow and raises the chance of infection developing.

Treatment
Treatment is guided by symptoms, medical history, and overall health.
For uncomplicated UTIs, pharmacists can provide appropriate treatment and advice through the NHS Pharmacy First service (for eligible patients under 65).
Pain relief such as over-the-counter medication may help manage discomfort while symptoms improve.
In cases of recurrent UTIs, additional treatments such as vaginal creams may be prescribed where appropriate.
Pharmacists can offer a convenient assessment and treatment option without the need for a GP appointment for eligible patients.
Patients over 65 are not included in Pharmacy First for UTIs and should seek advice from a GP.
Possible Complications
In some cases, a UTI can spread to the kidneys or bloodstream, requiring urgent medical attention.
Symptoms of more serious infection should be assessed promptly by a GP or through NHS 111.
Certain groups are at higher risk of UTIs, including people with diabetes, due to reduced immune response.
Women are generally more prone to UTIs due to anatomical differences that make bacterial transfer easier.
Pregnancy, contraceptive methods such as diaphragms, and postmenopausal changes can also increase the risk of developing a UTI.
Age-related changes and a weakened immune system may further increase vulnerability in older adults.
